It’s been a rather bloody weekend on the country’s roads: Seven people between the ages of 25 and 35 were killed in head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a truck on the R545 between Bethal and Kriel in Mpumalanga on Sunday morning, 17 October 2021.
ER paramedics arrived at the scene just before 03:00 and found the minibus taxi and truck off the side of the road.
“Five deceased could initially be seen entrapped in the wreck of the taxi. Once the fire department begun the process of extraction, a further two bodies were found. None of those found showed any signs of life and were declared dead on arrival,” ER24 spokesperson Ross Campbell said.
The bus of the truck managed to survive the accident.
Man survives after car rolles over
Meanwhile in another incident, a 32-year-old in the North West is being treated in hospital after his vehicle rolled on the R502 in Orkney, and he was ejected.
“ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene at 5.33pm on Saturday along with the fire department to find the injured man lying some 25m from the wreck of his VW Polo on the side of the road. He was assessed and found to be in a critical condition,” Campbell said.
For now, it isn’t clear why his car rolled over and an investigation is still underway.
Paramedics managed to stabilise him upon arrival at the scene, before transporting him to Tshepong Provincial Hospital in Klerksdorp for further care.
