CopperFresh: Self-cleaning smart masks
During a conversation on CapeTalk, the local firm CopperFresh said that their pink copper masks are capable of “self-sanitising” and “killing the SARS-Cov-2 virus”.
CopperFresh is the brainchild of David Ash, Dean Lazarus and Roy Miller, a trio of local entrepreneurs, who say their latest product is an “innovative solution to curb the spread of the SARS-Cov-2 virus”.
It was revealed that copper oxide, which acts as a natural anti-viral, is “impregnated” into the material fibres of the mask.
“Any pathogen that lands on our material cannot reproduce and it dies,” Ash said during the interview.
It turns out that the technology has been around for a while, as Ash added that it was first approved by the FDA in 2018. The company’s official websites reference various studies published on the technology. In one study, it was found that the CopperFresh technology de-activated 100% of the coronavirus on the surface of the mask in one to five minutes.
Keeping you safe and protected
“It was originally designed for wound dressing, as the copper in wound dressing heals a wound up to 70% quicker,” Ash explained further.
It is said that whereas regular cloth or other material masks do not de-activate viruses (in fact the virus remains on the mask for up to a number of days, exposing people to further risk if they touch their face after touching an infected mask), the CopperFresh mask constantly and actively de-activate viruses, keeping you feeling safe and protected.
It is said that the company has built a factory in Johannesburg, as they want to be “proudly South African”.
What’s more, according to Business Insider South Africa, the company also gained South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) approval for manufacture and therefore expects to ramp up production within the next few months.
Where can I buy a smart face mask?
Ash said that the face masks are R30 each, but they’re in talks with a big retailer to bring them onto the market at under a rand a day.
The masks are also re-usable and can be worn for up to a number of weeks (or longer). As long as the mask material is intact, you are protected.
If your mask gets dirty, simply get a slightly damp cloth and rub the dirt off lightly.
