There was heartbreak for all long-suffering Bafana Bafana supporters on Sunday when the national side failed to qualify for next year’s Soccer World Cup in Qatar.
Hugo Broos’ men needed to avoid defeat in their sixth and final Group G clash away against Ghana to progress to the next stage of qualification.
Alas, it was not meant to be.
A penalty in the 33rd minute from Andre Ayew – playing in his 100th international – was enough to give the Black Stars a 1-0 victory on the night and see them top the standings on goal difference.
The loss was the first for Broos since taking over as coach.
The long wait for Bafana Bafana to qualify for a World Cup goes on, having last done so all the way back in 2002.
South Africa hosted the 2010 World Cup meaning Bafana Bafana didn’t need to qualify in order to play.
Meanwhile, earlier on Sunday, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia played to a 1-1 draw in the group’s other match.
