Tenant murders landlord over rent, electricity dispute

A tenant allegedly murdered her 63-year-old landlord in his bedroom after he threatened to disconnect her electricity during a heated argument regarding her rent payment.

SAPS regional spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, said that the landlord had threatened to disconnect her electricity just moments before the argument turned to physical blows.

Makhele said police officers from the Navalsig police station in the Freestate had arrested the 67-year-old tenant on Wednesday night after she had allegedly fought with her landlord about rent money. The murder occurred inside the landlord’s bedroom at around 8.33pm on Wednesday.

“It is alleged that a 67-year-old tenant was with her landlord’s wife sitting on the balcony, when the 63 year old (landlord) arrived accusing her of not paying rent and threatened to switch off her electricity connection,” Makhele said.

Argument with tenant over rent spirals to physical blows

“Upon entering the main house on his way to the main switch in the bedroom, an argument ensued.  The argument allegedly led to exchange of blows and the two fought in the bedroom where the 63-year-old held the victim down on top of the bed strangling her,” he said.

“The tenant managed to reach for a glass plate and allegedly smashed it against the 63-year-old’s head and that led to a deep cut in the neck and heavy bleeding,” Makhele said.

Makhele said emergency services who responded to the scene of the crime had declared the landlord dead.

He said that the police had arrested the tenant and charged her with murder. She is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court soon.

Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane urged the public to find better ways to deal with arguments to prevent violence.

“Let us try to communicate verbally and address issues appropriately without having to engage in fights,” Motswenyane said.
