The dubious Ghana penalty decision that knocked Bafana Bafana out of the 2022 Qatar World Cup Qualifiers



Bafana Bafana have been knocked out of the 2022 Qatar World Cup Qualifiers by Ghana, following a 1-0 loss.

Ghana’s win did not come without controversy ,however, with Senegalese referee Maguette Ndiaye awarding a dubious penalty against Bafana Bafana.

It was a cagey affair for the most part between the two sides, with Ghana enjoying their home advantage by form of greater possession and physical dominance. Bafana Bafana where, for the most part of that first half, chasing shadows, with their midfield which included the likes of Thibang Phete, Teboho Mokoena and Ethan Brooks often being bullied and finding themselves second best in their individual battles. 

Bafana Bafana were able to withstand the early pressure

With that being said, however, Bafana Bafana’s defence remained resolute in their efforts to deal with the Ghanian attack, which was spearheaded by both experienced Ayew brothers Andre and Jordan. Despite being uncomfortable throughout certain attacks from the Black Stars, the one aspect the South Africans were hardly troubled by was dealing with corners.

The Ghanaians had been receiving a lot of corners, and subsequently piling the pressure on Bafana Bafana, but there near post defending of the poor quality corners from the Black Stars proved not to be an issue at all for the visitors. 

Dubious penalty awarded to the Ghanians

That was until one finally found its way past the near post and was met by Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey, who with just the merest touch from Bafana Bafana defender Rushine de Reuck, went tumbling down with the kind of theatrics and acting skills that could get him a lead role on The Queen.

Ndiaye would go on to give the penalty, however, with Andre Ayew, who was earning his landmark 100th appearance for Ghana on the night, stepped up as the captain, slotting the spot kick away, and sending Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams the wrong way in the process. In the end that goal would prove to be the decisive one as it sent the home side to the play-off round of the World Cup Qualifiers and the visitors home.
