Supporters of former President Jacob Zuma are gathering at the People’s Park in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, where a prayer meeting is being held on Thursday, 14 October. Zuma was recently released from prison on medical parole.

Prominent Zuma allies in attendance at the “welcome home” event on Thursday include Ace Magashule, Carl Niehaus and Lindiwe Sisulu.

The Jacob Zuma foundation organised the event to celebrate Zuma’s release on medical parole following a brief stint in prison. He was jailed because he refused to appear before the State Capture Commission of Inquiry.

He was admitted to hospital shortly after he arrived at Estcourt Prison in July and eventually he was released on medical parole because of complications related to an unknown ailment.

The former president has been relatively quiet since his medical release. However, earlier this month his foundation released a video in which the former president encouraged the public to vote for the ANC in the forthcoming local government elections.

Carl Niehaus, the spokesperson of the UMkhonto WeSizwe Military Veterans’ Association (MKMVA) said that Zuma was expected to make an appearance at the event organised in his honour. He has not been seen in public since his release from prison.

The organisers of the event said they expect more than 2000 people to show up for the event.
